Hey Batter, Batter! steps up to the plate at The Grace Museum

Abilene, TX (April 26, 2006)  A special exhibit of professional baseball memorabilia is “stepping up to the place” at The Grace Museum Friday.

Hey Batter, Batter! A History of Baseball in Abilene is an exhibition of memorabilia from the former Abilene Blue Sox as well as items from the collection of Abilenians who played professional baseball.

The exhibit, sponsored by Helen Grace Eplen, takes visitors on a journey through the days of the Blue Sox, a minor league team that played in the late 1940s and early 1950s. The 1946 Blue Sox were named one of the top 100 minor league baseball teams of all time, after posting one of the best winning percentages in baseball history with a record of 97-40 (.708).

Among the items on loan for Hey Batter, Batter! are 1950s Blue Sox pitcher Dink Whisenhunt's gold-dipped glove, a 1953 Blue Sox signed baseball, a John Lackey game-worn minor league baseball hat, and Abilene native and ex-Houston Astros/Kansas City Royals Chuck Harrison's baseball card.

Hey Batter, Batter! A History of Baseball in Abilene , will be on exhibit in Gallery A on The Grace Museum's 2nd Floor through Saturday, July 8.

The Grace Museum is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday; and from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. every Thursday. Admission is free Thursday evening after 5 p.m. For more information on Hey Batter, Batter! A History of Baseball in Abilene , call The Grace Museum at 325-673-4587.
