Early Texas artists focus of new exhibit at The Grace Museum

Abilene, TX (April 12, 2006)  Texas artists who generally did their work before 1950 are the focus of a new exhibit at The Grace Museum.

Early Texas Artists, 1900-1950 features the work of such noted artists as Frederick Becker, Jerry Bywaters, Reid Crowell, Edward G. Eisenlohr, and Bertha Landers.

Early Texas art is generally defined as work in any medium created before, according to Kathryn Best, The Grace Museum Director of Education. Artists such as Robert J. Onderdonk, Frank Reaugh, and Vivian Aunspaugh were among the earliest of Texas artists, and they set the foundation for art in the state. They began practicing and teaching art in the 1890s and were established art legends in the Dallas area by the 1930s. Together they nurtured a generation of artists who would thrive in Texas during the first half of the 20th century.

Early Texas Artists, 1900-1950 will be on display through July 29 in The Grace's 2nd Floor Gallery B.

The Grace Museum is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday; and from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. every Thursday. Admission is free Thursday evening after 5 p.m.
