New
Grace exhibit features Earth, sky, prominent artists
Abilene, TX (October 9, 2007)
- A new exhibit opening Saturday at The Grace Museum
features the work of two prominent artists and their perspective
on the Earth and sky.
"Earth &
Sky invites you to experience the unique visions of
two artists working in different media on opposite coasts
and yet sharing a common inspiration; our ever changing and
life sustaining earth and sky," said Judy Deaton, Curator
of Art and Exhibits for The Grace.
"Typically relegated
to background status, earth, sky and sea are celebrated as
the primary subject matter by artists Nancy Hellebrand and
Barry Masteller."
Hellebrand, a nationally
recognized Florida based photographer, uses a digital camera
to capture raw material for her prints, abandoning the tradition
of taking photographs solely to capture realism. Expressive
digital manipulation enhances the granular quality of her
prints. The grainy surface is alive with active bits of natural
energy continuing their dynamic rhythm irrespective of human
motivation.
"The oil paintings
of California artist Barry Masteller are radiant meditations
on the transforming qualities of light on natural landscape
and the surrounding atmosphere," said Deaton. "He
interprets the last light of day when shadows are strongest
and the light is at its greatest intensity along the horizon.
Oil paint is delicately applied to the canvas using brush
and cloth, resulting in glowing vistas of earth, sea and sky.
"Nancy Hellebrand
and Barry Masteller capture the wonder and majesty of our
fragile environment devoid of specifics to ground us in time
or place. Both artists present their personal interpretations
of the universal phenomenon that is the earth and sky.
Earth + Sky opens
Saturday in The Grace's second floor Galleries A and B and
