Area 'Great Thinkers' show off genius at Grace Museum competition
Abilene , TX ( November 10,
2006 ) – More than 300 area gifted and talented students
will get the chance to show off their creative genius Tuesday
at The Grace Museum.
The 3rd- through
6th-grade students - from the Abilene Independent School District's
Alternative Learning Program for gifted Students (ALPS), and
the Wylie Independent School District's Gifted and Talented
program - comprise 82 teams that have been working since early
September to come up with an invention of their own as part
of The Grace Great Thinkers Competition.
The competition is
being held in conjunction with The Grace's current Main Gallery
exhibit, The Inventions of Leonardo da Vinci, which
focuses on 16 of da Vinci's drawings reproduced on graphic
panels and also realized in model form.
For the competition,
students were challenged to select a task or chore of their
everyday lives and design a machine or tool that would make
their lives easier. The "catch" is that their invention
had to be powered only by what was available to da Vinci
... no electricity or computers.
Each team had to create
a tri-fold that displays their design, including detailed
drawings (like da Vinci's notebooks) with notes to explain
the teams' critical and analytical thinking. In addition,
at least one of the drawings had to be a "cut-away"
view so judges and visitors could see the inner workings of
the machine.
Students will be setting
up their projects from 3 to 5 p.m. Monday at The Grace. A
panel of experts will judge each project on creativity, appearance
and effort, machine design, and communication. The top three
teams in each category (3rd and 4th grade; and 5th and 6th
grade) will receive awards during the reception Tuesday from
6 to 7 p.m.
