Unique, beautiful quilt exhibit comes to The Grace July 29

Abilene, TX (July 18, 2006)  A unique and beautiful quilt exhibit will adorn the walls at The Grace Museum beginning Saturday, July 29

American Pattern Paintings: Wooden Quilts features the work of Abilene and Albany native Fay Jean Hooker.

Hooker's fascination with wood, paint and quilts led her to develop an innovative approach to contemporary quiltmaking. The artist refers to herself as a "wood quilter" when she is working in her studio.

"I use the painted wood as my fabric, the placing and gluing of the pieces as my quilting process, and the completed construction as my interpretation of a contemporary American wall quilt," she said.

Hooker was one of 24 American artists selected to exhibit in the First International Biennale of Contemporary Art in Arad , Romania in 2005.

Hooker grew up in Abilene and Albany , but her travels have taken her to New York City and Washington , D.C. She moved to the Eastern Shore of Maryland in 1996 where she currently lives and works in her studio -- a converted barn.

American Pattern Paintings: Wooden Quilts will be on exhibit in The Grace's 2nd Floor Gallery C through November 25.

The Grace Museum is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday; and from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. every Thursday. Admission is free Thursday evening after 5 p.m.
