The Grace Museum announces Volunteers of the Year

Abilene, TX (April 13, 2006)  The Grace Museum recently announced the recipients of their Volunteer of the Year awards.

Jeanne Standard was named the Volunteer of the Year. Standard is a regular fixture at The Grace's Visitor Service Desk, where she volunteers every Tuesday afternoon. She has been volunteering for more than six years at the Museum, and also gives freely of her time to church, community and agricultural endeavors.

Judy Wilson was named the Outreach Docent of the Year. Wilson signed on to be an outreach docent - a volunteer who goes into the schools to teach hands-on art activities to elementary students - in 2001 when The Grace first began taking art lessons into the schools. Five years later, she remains one of the Museum's most valued volunteers, said Kathryn Best, Director of Education. "Judy is no stranger to the skills needed to coax elementary students into learning. Her skills as both an educator and an artist have grown with the children's, and the result is a natural teacher and a fine artist too."

Bera Johnson was named the Docent of the Year. Johnson joined The Grace's docent team in August of 2005 and hasn't slowed down yet. A public school teacher and librarian for more than 30 years, Johnson also serves as a hospice volunteer. The Grace's docents serve as part of the education team, teaching children about art history and appreciation. They also lead tours for local and area school groups.

"The Grace thanks all of our volunteers who give freely of their time, energy and ability to promote an understanding of art and history to our patrons," said Judy Godfrey, President/CEO of The Grace.

The Grace Museum is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday; and from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. every Thursday. Admission is free Thursday evening after 5 p.m.
