Students will be introduced
to Carmen Lomas Garza’s The Fair in Reynosa/La Feria
en Reynosa, both as an artwork and as an illustration
in her storybook Family Pictures/Cuadros de Familia. Students
will compare and contrast the three images with a three-way
graphic organizer and then create works of art that communicate
their own stories. |

Van Allsburg and The Polar Express |

Students will be introduced
to the poster and illustrated book, The Polar Express
by Chris Van Allsburg. They will investigate and compare
the two through discussion and will read and discuss his
Caldecott Metal acceptance speech for The Polar Express.
They will also write a short review that compares the
book and the poster. |

Ringgold and Tar Beach |

Students will be introduced
to Faith Ringgold's Tar Beach as both a book and a reproduction.
Students will write and illustrate a personal story using
Faith Ringgold's quilt block format after investigating
and reading Faith Ringgold's Tar Beach. |

Students will create
tessellating designs using congruent polygons after learning
about M.C. Escher. |

| In
Print and Paint: Picturing Identity through the Self-Portrait
& Autobiography |
 |
|
Students will be introduced to the
remarkable parallels and meaningful connections between
self-portraits and autobiographies through a self-portrait
and memoirs of artist Elisabeth Vigee-Lebrun. Then they
will write autobiographical poems both as a class and
individually. |

| Forces
of Nature: Natural Disasters Portrayed in Art |

|
Students will investigate the destructive,
natural force of a tornado through the historical painting,
Tornado Over Kansas. They will also each write an illustrated
letter based on personal experience or from the point
of view of one of the characters in the artwork. |
