Curatorial and Collections Internships

SUMMER 2019

 

DURATION: Summer 2019, Approximate Start Date June 3, 2019 through August 9, 2019 (10 Weeks)

INTERNSHIP FUNDING: $1,500.00, 20 hours per week. 

OBJECTIVES OF INTERNSHIP: Assist with the inventory of various sub-collections including:

  • Texas & Pacific Railway Collection (objects and artifacts)

  • Historic photographs

  • History objects that were on long-term exhibition

  • Historic Period Room objects

  • Art Collection

This internship will provide the student/individual with an opportunity to gain an understanding of museum professional standards and experience in collections management aspects of a museum.    

SCOPE OF WORK:

  • Assist with the continuation of the comprehensive inventory of the art and history collection

  • Add and update catalog entries in the museum’s PastPerfect database

  • Take documentary digital photographs of objects

  • Complete detailed condition reports on art and history objects

  • Provide proper housing for history artifacts and archives using proper archival materials/methods

  • Assist with exhibition related projects as needed

  • Assist with other projects that might arise during the duration of the internship

EDUCATION:

Must be currently enrolled or recently graduated from an accredited graduate or undergraduate level program in art, art history, museum studies, public history, history or other related field.

 

EXPERIENCE/SKILLS PREFERENCES:

  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail

  • Trained in proper handling of museum objects and archival materials

  • Experience or training in a museum database or records management

  • Ability to express ideas orally and in writing

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Adobe Photoshop

  • Ability to work independently or with a group

  • Ability to lift 30 lbs.
